Insufficient Answers

Isat in the bed and breakfast living room and looked at Matagorda Bay. How peaceful it was here versus the horror outside the bay entrance. The Captain refused to divulge what the plot to kill thousands of Americans consisted of, but there wasn’t any doubt in my mind the conspiracy existed, and it was well along.

When the doorbell rang, Julia came out of the kitchen carrying a tray of tea and cookies. Balancing the tray on her hip, she opened the door and greeted someone I couldn’t see.

“Welcome, please come in. I was just thinking of you. Our new friend from the dinner a few weeks back is in town and asking questions. You know more about Panchaia than anyone else, and I immediately thought of calling you,” Julia said pleasantly.

If I wasn’t already taken…. Then, I dragged my mind back to safer subjects. Who could be at the door? Vargas is out of town.

A man in his early thirties followed Julia into the room, smiled, and held out his hand as Julia introduced him.

“Did you make it into the kitchen during my dinner party? I don’t remember. This is Kenny, our main helper during the dinner. According to my cousin, our resident chef, he is one hell of a sous chef. He owns a bar in town and loaned us equipment to cater a large party. Kenny’s dad was one of the archaeologists who worked on raising the French ship from the 1600s and moved it to the museum in Austin. He knows the history of Panchaia like no one else in town,” Julia announced. A big grin spread across her face, and her entire being appeared to light up.

The lady is in love, I thought. I stuck out my hand and shook Kenny’s. The man looked me in the eyes and gave a firm grip but didn’t make it a contest.

“How can I help?” Kenny asked.

I noticed his slight smile and decided to address it upfront. “I suppose being asked history questions is a little like approaching a doctor at a cocktail party to ask about a pain in your knee.”

“I never thought of it,” Kenny laughed. “History isn’t of a whole lot of interest to people nowadays. Most people want to know if I am making money at the bar and what a liquor license costs. I lie like hell, depending on who I am talking to. You are safe with history questions, though. No reason to lie.”

I noticed the startled look on Julia’s face and wondered but asked my first question. “Have you ever heard of the ships Cajun Lady of New Orleans or the Dublin Joy?

“Well, now, you are going back a bit. My Dad told stories about the Lady of New Orleans. I don’t remember the word Cajun in there, but it could be. He claimed the government found the ship adrift and took it to a shipyard, where they removed most of the superstructure. They didn’t find what they were looking for, so they towed it to deeper water and sunk it.
